Russell Evans

Lance Cpl. Russell Evans, a Martinsville Marine, was killed Saturday in an accident in Vietnam, where he had arrived little more than a week ago.

Although the third Morgan County serviceman to die in the Vietnam war zone, he was not killed in action, but died instantly when the sand bag hut in which he was living fell in on him.

Word of his death was received here this morning by his wife, Patty Lambert, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Evans. The message was received in Indianapolis Sunday night and brought to the family here early this morning by Lt. Julian R. Choate Jr. of the U.S. Marine Corp. Lt. Choate will return here again Thursday to talk with the family. He said that it would be from five to 15 days before the arrival of the body.

The youth was last in Martinsville during a short leave in March. He had his basic training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., with later training at Camp LeJeune, N.C., and was later in Cuba four months before returning to Camp Pendleton for advanced training before going overseas. He left there on April 28.

He was born Dec. 6, 1945, and had always lived in Martinsville. He was married on Jan. 8, 1966. He had been in service since March 1 of that year.

Besides his wife his wife, who had been living with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lester, at 459 N. Elliott Ave., during his absence, he leaves his parents, two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Opal Sanders who lives south of this city. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Evans, have been living with their daughter, Mrs. Troxal, just north of the North School since their home on North Main Street burned two months ago.
