Gene Payton

Gene Julian Payton, who was injured in a car accident in May of 1962, died this morning in the Morgan County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Payton was a paraplegic, completely paralyzed from the chest down, and worked for some time as a switchboard operator at the local hospital. He had been hospitalized for only a short time preceding his death.

Living his entire life in the county, Mr. Payton was a member of the Pentecostal Faith. He attended Martinsville Schools for 10 years, but graduated from the James Roberts Wheel Chair School in Indianapolis.

Born Jan. 26, 1945, he was the son of Eugene and Barbara Burleigh Payton. His father survives in Indianapolis along with a brother, Robert Payton of North Vernon.

The Rev. Betty Quakenbush and the Rev. Robert Porter will officiate at funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 2 0’clock at the Neal and Summers Chapel. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.

Friends may call at the mortuary Sunday from 2 to 9 o’clock, on Monday until 9 and Tuesday until time of the services.
