John Skaggs

The funeral for John R. Skaggs, 37, 1390 Bill Smith Road, is Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Neal and Summers Mortuary. The Rev. Harold Hatfield will officiate, and burial will be in Centennial Cemetery. Friends may call today from 2 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary and on Sunday until service time.

Mr. Skaggs was killed Thursday afternoon about 4 o’clock near Shelby, N.C., where he was attempting to unload heavy pipe from a truck and the load shifted and fell on him. He was employed as a trucker for Universal Tank and Iron Works and was a lifelong Martinsville area resident.

The son of Harold and Mary Messmer Skaggs, he was born in this city July 15, 1946. On Dec. 31, 1971, he married Deanna Wolfe, and his parents and wife are survivors.

Other survivors include two sons, Chris and Jay, and two daughters, Amy and April, all at home; and three brothers, David and James of Martinsville and Keith of Arizona.

Mr. Skaggs was a former Indiana National Guardsman. He graduated from Martinsville High School In 1964, and the family has requested that memorials be made in the way of contributions to the high school’s scholarship fund.
